Here is a rundown of the TikTok app. So, If you thought the TikTok app has come out of nowhere, you’re not wrong.
After its launch in early 2018, major news organizations have covered TikTok and has generated millions of downloads worldwide.
Even if you’re still not sure what TikTok is, you probably saw a video from the TikTok app on a different social media platform. Since a lot of celebrities and athletes are hopping on the TikTok train, don’t be surprised to see more TikTok from public figures.
As someone who downloaded the app, then started to talk about it to others, shared numerous posts, and even made a few videos of my own, I’m pretty sure this platform will stick around for quite some time and give the other platforms a run for their users.
TikTok is a fast-paced video-sharing app. The second you sign in, TikTok will start showing you viral content. As you play around with the app, TikTok will slowly try to figure out what type of videos you are interested in. The more play around with the app, TikTok will have a better idea of what kind of videos to put on your for you page. After a short test period, you will start to see a video that is algorithmically curated at the top of the list, that’s relative to your interests.
TikTok has all the standard functions as most social media apps. You can follow, comment, and like videos directly from the home page, and much more.
If you’re not in love with what you see, you can swipe up to see more videos right away, like you would on a dating app. Next option, please!
Time will fly when consuming TikTok content, so be careful you don’t fall in love with the For You Page. Videos are typically between fifteen seconds to one minute. It is excellent for people who would instead consume entertainment in a short period. The videos have an extensive range of choices. Some are instructional, interactive, dance, competition challenges, and motivational are just a few to name.
Now let’s breakdown the app to see what the craze is all about. Once you land on the home screen, which is called the For You Page, a video will automatically start playing. You can give it a watch, or if the content is not appealing to you, you can swipe up.
As for all the buttons on the screen, it’s plentiful and takes a bit of time to get the hang of navigating. I hope you are ready.

The creator’s profile picture will have a tiny red plus sign if you want to follow them. You can click on the profile picture to go to the profile page to find older videos and a small bio of the creator.
You will see their handle, who they follow, their followers, and like counts. You have the option of following them here as well. Tiktok lets their users link their YouTube and Instagram accounts.
You can drop a like if you like the video. You can also see the total number of likes from other users. Just a warning, if you like a video, this makes TikTok think you like this type of content. Meaning you will start seeing more content to videos you drop a heart. One piece of information, if you like too many videos, TikTok will ban you for liking videos for a few hours. #guilty
The comment bubble indicates the number of comments already made.
You can read the comments and interact with other users of TikTok in the comments section. Commenting on a post is a perfect way to communicate with the creator and other users who have the same interests.
A Share Arrow
The Share Arrow allows you to share the video. The sharing options on TikTok let you share on so many other platforms. Some other features TikTok enables you to:
- Favourite Video
- Send as a Gif
- Share to different platforms
TikTok allows you to have duet videos, which is a fun feature for singers, dancers, role-playing, and more. By selecting the duet feature, you can use the footage and combine it with a video you want to create. You will need to play around with the function. If your video is selected to be part of a duet, you will get more attention to the video because the creator’s TikTok Handles are automatically put in the caption as well.
TikTok also has a new feature called Sitch, where if you see a video that you want to use in your video, you can combine it with the Stitch feature, just as you’re sewing two pieces of clothing together. You may render a new beginning, a middle one, or an end one. You are basically, trimming parts of videos and adding them to a new video.
You can save the videos to your phone directly for personal use or reshare the video a separate platform. Besides, TikTok allows you to share videos across numerous platforms
- Facebook and Messenger
- Instagram Feed and Stories
- SMS Messenger

A Spinning Record/ A Ticker with The Audio’s Name
One of TikTok’s unique selling point is how you can quickly add music and audio to your videos. Just by tapping the music icon, you will be led to the music page. You can see other videos using the same music. TikTok’s music and commentary go viral for these reasons. Audio may be a trendy, catchy, informative or even social media challenge.
Every video will show you the creator’s name, the caption and hashtags. Many videos use the built-in effects of TikTok. You can tap to see which effects are being used and even use the effect for one of your videos. Quite similar to other social media apps, and if you click on the hashtag, you can find relevant videos to a specific hashtag.
TikTok’s got two pages. The famous For You Page, where TikTok plays trendy and recommended videos that you may like. TikTok’s following page are for the accounts you follow. They split the two pages so you can enjoy the accounts you follow or give you the chance to find the new accounts TikTok suggests for you.
In the search page of TikTok, you can discover all of TikTok’s content. By clicking the search icon, you will have a buffet of options.
- Top Users
You can see the top trending hashtags with the metrics of each top hashtag. Most of the top trending hashtags are in the millions. It is a useful way to find new accounts and see what videos are trending.
Create A Video
I must give TikTok credit; the way users can edit a video within the app is probably why most users enjoy using TikTok. TikTok has the tools you need to edit a video from scratch. You will need to play with the resources and figure them out for yourself.
- Camera View lets you toggle between front and back cameras on your phone
- Speed of your video – 0.2x 0.5x 1x 2x 3x
- Camera Effects – 199 different camera effects
- Beauty Mode that makes your face cheeks rosier
- Video Filters – portrait, landscape, find, vibe
- A Timer to help you create clips
- Add Sound
- Add Effects
- Add Video Descriptions
You can choose the 60s or 15s for your video. However, you can make a video without a timer and just upload it as you see appropriate, the max in the 60s. You can also upload a previously shot video from your camera roll. TikTok has a photo model animation if you just want to upload photos. Go through the 11 choices to see which one you think is best suited to your pictures. When you finish editing your TikTok video, go to the final screen before publishing. Here is where you will add the final touches to your video before you upload it.
Here’s the last chance to set the rotation of your video or test the video’s speed. TikTok allows you to add video filters, voice-overs, and sound. TikTok will recommend songs for you. If you don’t like any of them, you can search more on the Sound Search tab.
Within the search page, you can discover sounds, commentary, and songs. TikTok as made their category playlists with:
- Trending Songs,
- New Releases,
- Sweat It Out
- Greatest Hits
- Stage Screen
One of the strategic advantages of TikTok is to let the developers apply visual effects to the images. Creators may select how long the effect will be used and which parts of the video. Creators have choices for effects that involve all sorts of transitions, split-screen, and time length.
When it comes to adding text to your TikTok video, it doesn’t play around.
You can switch between various fonts and colours. After, you can change the size and length. You can also add trendy stickers and emojis to your video.
Right before you upload your final product, TikTok helps you to add captions and hashtags. You mention someone in your caption. You can choose a cover for the video.
Choose which options you want to enable or disable so who can view your video, allow comments or not. You can allow the stitch and duet feature.
Just before you publish the post, you can share your video with other platforms. Like WhatsApp, Instagram, Twitter, etc. After you post, TikTok will lead you to the other platforms for resharing.
One thing I like about TikTok is how TikTok leaves a watermark on the videos.
And when you share your TikTok videos on other sites, you’ll see the TikTok logo, which is smart marketing when it comes to fighting social media platforms.
In the inbox section, TikTok will show you all of your activity. You can sort by category.
